A license is required for every machine or physical host that you want to backup. In the case when the product is used on a cluster, each node of the cluster must be licensed.

Acronis Backup 12.5 is available in two options:
- Subscription licenses are available in one-, two- and three-year options, including technical support and upgrades to new versions for the entire subscription period. This type of license also includes access to the cloud console.
- Perpetual licenses include one year of maintenance and technical support and upgrades to new versions. Upon the expiration of the initial maintenance period, the maintenance must be renewed to continue to receive technical support and upgrade benefits. Note that the perpetual license includes only the on-premise installation of Acronis Backup 12.5 and does not include the cloud console.
Expiration starts once the subscription keys are registered under Acronis account.
When adding a new subscription license key to the ones already registered in the account, you will be offered a choice:
- to increase quotas, or
- to renew the current subscription
After choosing 'Increase' or 'Renew' quota, you will see the preview of how quota / expiration date will be re-calculated (see screenshot above). Changes will be applied after clicking on 'Register' button.
Please note that after registering the subscription in the Account, to apply the changes in on-premise console,you need to click Sync button (Login to account is required).

You only need one license for your virtual host. Downgrade questions
You can only downgrade Acronis Backup 12.5 licenses to Acronis Backup 11.7/Acronis Backup for VMware (vmProtect 9). Downgrading to earlier versions is not available.

Compatibility questions
Please note that if your previous product is installed on one of the following operating systems, upgrade to Acronis Backup 12.5 will not be possible as they are no longer supported:
- Windows 2000 (agent). There's no way to upgrade the agent installed on Windows 2000, neither use it with an upgraded management server. You can perform a backup by means of bootable media, though.
- 32-bit operating systems (AMS, ASN). There's no direct upgrade for AMS and ASN installed on a 32-bit system. To perform an upgrade for AMS, you can export/import to a 64-bit system using a side-by-side method. For ASN, detach vaults and then attach them to a 64-bit server with v12.5 ASN.
- Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista (AMS, ASN). To upgrade, follow the same process as for 32-bit operating systems.

License Management
After you added licenses to Management Server, they should be assigned to the machines that you want to backup.
There are two ways to assign licenses:
1) A license is automatically assigned to a machine when a backup plan is applied
2) You can also assign licenses manually:
- In Console, go to Settings -> Licenses
- Click on the icon of the license that you want to assign:
- The software displays the license keys that correspond to the selected license:
- Select the key to assign and click Assign
- The software displays the list of machines that the selected key can be assigned to. Select the machine, and click Done
After you added licenses to Management Server and clicked Sync, only subscription licenses are synchronized to Acronis Account. Currently permanent licenses are not synchronized with Acronis Account: please register them manually as described here
Similarly, perpetual licenses are not synchronized from Acronis Account to licenses list in Management Server: to add permanent licenses to the licenses list, click Add keys, enter the licenses and click Add
After you added licenses to Management Server, click Sync to synchronize subscription licenses to Acronis Account (you will need to sign in to Acronis Account if you haven't signed in before). Once the license key is synchronized with Acronis Account subscription license is activated automatically . Upon activation, the subscription expiration date is defined and you can use the product within the subscription period.
