I must temper the remarks below by warning that my example of this scanner has failed 27 days after delivery. The carriage bearing the scanning bar jammed at the full extent of its travel, emitting a screeching noise. I was able to coax it back to its home position half an inch at a time, by switching the power on and off repeatedly. However, when I attempted another scan, the problem immediately recurred. This was the first scan of the day, and the machine had been perfectly alright the day before.
Here's what I originally said ...
I recommend this scanner, which is a competent unit at a good price point.
It's cool running and quiet, and its wallwart remains cold after a day's scanning.
In a timed hour's scanning of A3 images at my chosen resolution of 150dpi, it did 85 scans, and the image quality was good.
The imaging system employed does not enable the device to peer deep into the centre crease of a book (I was scanning double-page spreads from a perfect-bound A4 desk diary), so you will need to press lightly on the spine of a book to bring its pages into the fullest contact with the glass.
Under Windows 7 Pro, installation was straightforward. I loaded the supplied optical disk, it autoran and put up a menu. I chose driver installation, which took only a moment. I then attached the scanner to the PC. I already had the excellent VueScan from hamrick.com on my PC, so I didn't install any of the other software provided. VueScan found the new scanner and it worked immediately.
The scanner has no buttons or switches at all, being entirely commanded from the PC. The package includes the software disk, a standard A-to-B USB lead, a 2-pin wallwart with a 3-pin UK adapter into which it clamps firmly, and two multi-lingual foldout sheets - one for PC users and one for Mac users. The hinged lid is easily removed completely for book scanning, and is just as easily reinstalled.
The scanner's imaging technology does not support the scanning of objects which are not in contact with the glass. A rough and ready experiment found that it could not bring into focus anything that was more than at most 5mm away. This machine is designed just for scanning paper, which it does well.
At 301 x 433mm, the glass is very slightly larger than A3's 297 x 420mm, but the effective scanning area seems to be exactly A3. If you want a slightly larger image, you could consider the Plustek A320 A3 scanner but it costs three times the price, although it does utilise a technology which is better at peering into that centre crease.
The MUST ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 Pro meets my requirement and is at the right price point, so I am very satisfied with it.
